Doing Dementia Differently: Dementia Care on the North Shore

Sydney’s North Shore is one of the city’s most prestigious and picturesque regions, known for its leafy streets, elegant homes, and a relaxed, village-like charm. Stretching from the Harbour Bridge to Hornsby, the area is divided into the Lower and Upper North Shore, each offering its own blend of natural beauty, heritage, and modern convenience. The North Shore is renowned for its many top performing schools, its enormous lush parks, and peaceful, tree-filled neighbourhoods, making it especially popular with families and retirees. Suburbs like Mosman, Killara, Wahroonga, and Turramurra feature beautiful Federation and contemporary homes, while bushland reserves, golf courses, and harbourside walks add to the region’s appeal. With excellent public transport, boutique shopping, and a welcoming community atmosphere, Sydney’s North Shore offers a timeless, refined lifestyle with close proximity to the city.

The Videri Australia model is firmly built on the belief that people should thrive in a home environment, receiving care of the highest standard. Traditional and beautiful homes, on traditional suburban streets around Sydney, where 6 to 10 residents live together. Residents have 24-hour support including dementia care, palliative and respite care, which is provided by a team of carers that we call Homemakers.

Our Videri home environments foster warmth, dignity and a true sense of home within the community.

Feels Like Home

Our homes are embedded in local communities with every effort made to create a place that truly feels like home. Recognisable and welcoming surroundings can ease cognitive challenges.

Power of Normal

Familiar, normal indoor and outdoor spaces, along with the comforting smells and sounds of home can significantly reduce the anxiety often caused by unfamiliar care environments.

Honouring Individuality

We support each person’s individual routine and likes/dislikes, not just as a care strategy but as a way to help you continue to live your vibrant life, just the way you’d like it.

The Videri Standard

Our homes are built not just to meet but exceed all Australian standards, so you can feel confident they’re not just beautiful, but safe and built to last, with best-practice dementia-friendly design.

Better Health Outcomes

Medical and Sector experts have recognised the ‘small household model’ as the best option for the future of aged care, referencing improved quality of life for people living with dementia.

High-touch Support

Each home has a consistent team of dedicated professionals who get to know each family well over time, building a lasting trust with the residents, their families and clinicians alike.
“We are so happy with how Sarah has settled in to Killara. The staff are magnificent also the change in Sarah is for the best. She is getting so involved with everyday activities, going out on bus trips to dog parks, we have not seen Sarah so happy for a long time. The interaction she’s having with the cleaning, mowing the lawn, flower arranging and all the activities she gets involved with is magnificent. Also her dancing and singing with the staff. And to top it off they have reduced Sarah’s medications which we feel is making enormous changes for the good, many thanks to all involved to giving Sarah a better life, cheers…”

Helpful reading, when you're ready

Take a moment. When you feel ready, we’ve gathered thoughtful notes and real answers to questions we’re often asked, designed to support you through each step.

The North Shore is where we built our first home, and where we initially expanded before moving to other parts of Sydney. It is an area with a high number of older Australians and a higher prevalence of dementia.

Videri Australia offers an alternative to traditional aged care on Sydney’s North Shore. One of the best attributes of the North Shore is its proximity to stunning green spaces like Lane Cove National Park and Garigal National Park. Walking in nature is known to have many emotional and cognitive benefits, and with so many homes being in close proximity to the parks, daily walks in nature are easy to achieve.

The shopping centres in the area have a friendly, village feel and this is also very important for people living with cognitive challenges. Feeling like you are in a friendly, forgiving space and seeing familiar faces – which is what we all enjoy about our local coffee shop – reduces anxiety and creates joy.

At Videri, we believe care should empower people living with dementia to continue to lead meaningful and purposeful lives. In the North Shore we have a range of homes, accommodating 6-10 residents, creating a sense of belonging and connection, unlike larger aged care homes. Our compassionate Homemakers provide personalised care that celebrates individuality, helping residents feel valued while supporting their unique needs.

Being based on the North Shore means our residents and their families benefit from the area’s wonderful lifestyle. From peaceful walks in national parks to dining in local restaurants, there are countless ways to create cherished moments. Our focus is on supporting residents to live life their way.

We offer assistance with daily living, complex care, short term restorative care, complex care, respite care, permanent care or support at later stages including palliative care. We take pride in creating homes where meaningful moments are celebrated every day, no matter where our residents are in their journey.

There are a large number of 100+ room residential aged care facilities that have secure dementia specific wards and/or Memory Support Units in the North Shore. Videri Australia is the only private small household model in the North Shore for between 6-10 residents living with dementia, offering 24/7 care and the highest standard of dementia care expertise.
This is the best way to understand how we do dementia differently in our homes. We also recommend visiting a couple of other North Shore residential aged care providers so that you can compare the environments and the dementia expertise at their facilities. To organise a tour of our North Shore homes, simply call us on 1300 015 406 or send us a Care Enquiry to arrange a time that suits you.

Not all of our homes have waitlists. The success of our home environments rests heavily on the curation of a resident cohort that is matched based on shared likes and commonality. When a room becomes available, we don’t just fill it with the next person on the list. We are always interested in meeting new peoplunderstandinging their life story and interests, and seeing who the best new fit for the home might be. If you’d like to know more about how we do this, simply call us on 1300 015 406 or send us a Care Enquiry and one of our team members will call you back.
